  1. 1. I choose to watch the film Ad and Ego. The film was about advertising and the effects that it has on us.
    2. I chose this film because of the discussion we had in class about air-brushing away people’s flaws when they appear on magazine covers. I find America’s definition of beauty very interesting. We idolize makeup covered, air brushed, and retouched people in pictures, but hardly ever person in their natural beauty. This seems to be the opposite of what we should be doing. We encourage people to hide what they actually look like, instead of teaching people to embrace their inner and outer beauty. I thought that this film would address why we teach our citizens to idolize things that aren’t real or reachable.
    3. a.) Advertising was created to make people aware of products. It started as a harmless way of informing people of what they could buy.
b.) As time went on, not enough products were being bought, so adverting sought to produce consumers.
c.) Now, the average person sees about 1500 advertisements a day. Whether or not you actually read them, they can affect you.
d.) Advertising seeks to affect your subconscious as well as your conscious. So even if you think that advertising doesn’t affect you, it could still be shaping the way you think.
e.) Advertising seeks to affect what you desire in life, like happiness, fun, a perfect body, or a sense of well being. These advertisements are purposely created to make your subconscious believe that buying a certain product will get you closer to your goal desires in life, such as happiness. Advertisers are perfectly aware that these products will not fulfill your life or make you happy, but they know that associating their product with such things will cause you to buy them.
    4. I was surprised about the idea behind make up advertising. The film presented the idea that advertisements don’t want to make women feel beautiful the way they are, because then women wouldn’t buy their products. Advertisements create an idea of beauty that isn’t real, which causes women to want products to help them move towards that “ideal” image of perfection. I had never thought about make up as being sold really just to benefit make up companies. I’d never thought about how women use make up just to look like the beautiful women they see in advertising, even though these images we see aren’t real.
    5. The part of the film that made me think differently was that advertising is directed at our subconscious just to make up buy products. Now when I see an advertisement, I will think about what buying that product will actually give me. Most likely, buying a product won’t bring me the things that advertising says it will, like happiness, a perfect body, or a sense of fulfillment. Thinking about advertising in this way will help me to buy less unnecessary things.

  2. 1.I choose to watch the film The First Year. The film is about a five first year teachers, 180 Days and children’s future. Some want to make difference. Some refuse to give up. They all want to change the world. The first year follows five teachers in California through the first year of their teaching careers. The teachers are a diverse lot, teaching different ages and classes at five different schools, but what remains consistent are the difficulties they face and the determination they bring to it.
2.I choose this film because it’s inspiring to me why I want to become a teacher in future. Taking some education class require field work experience outside school and give me the opportunity to see why I want to become teacher, observe different grade level and the way how all different teacher have a teaching strategies to teach in classroom. I enjoyed working with children and found that teaching was the best option for me to pursue my goals. The first year film is a wonderful documentary that shows the daily struggles of public school teachers in the face of apathetic administrations, parents and students. After viewing this film I was really inspired by how much the teachers were willing to sacrifice to make sure their students had at least the opportunity to succeed. However, I was saddened that they had to give so much because often the district and administration wasn’t doing its part. The documentary showed teaching in a very realistic light rather than the “oh, well they get weekends and summers off” light that many people think of it as.
3.I think this is such as fantastic documentary film to Gives you a whole new appreciation for teachers, especially the five portrayed here. I hope they (the teachers) stay with their work as they are obviously working from a deep passion becoming a teacher. I think for those students planned to become teacher they should watch this film to get experience how these five teachers teach in classroom. Also I will recommend students to take some education class because I think it will help them to see the opportunity becoming teacher and the grade level they prefer to teach.

  3. 4.I was surprised about the film is a fantastic, engaging, wonderful documentary. It chronicles the first years of teaching in inner-city of Los Angeles for five first time teachers. The teachers are passionate, driven, and full of the idealism of an unhanded educator. These are clearly strong, loving individuals who want to make a difference. Some segments are very emotional, such as when one teacher realizes how little his students have. The main thing that this documentary brings to mind is that the teachers who are helping these kids out are heroes and Heroes that not many people in our country recognize. The insight these heroes give into the rights and wrongs of the teaching profession are emotional and inspiring. It’s a film that the teacher commentaries options provides further insight into the lives these five fascinating individuals that you cannot help but love.
5.this film make me think differently was seeing how some teachers connect with their students and some teacher don’t connect with their students. Is see what happens when the system fails to serve, when families fail to support, and what the teachers must do when their idealism isn’t enough? For example, one teacher name Joy struggles with the difficulties of trying to reach her high school students. She must also overcome the obstacles of teaching without a classroom. In film I this one teacher name Joy who have connected with her students by getting know the students. These teacher challenges her students to look at themselves and their place in society. During with 180 day to teach students she learns to connect one or more students and determined to reach her students despite the overwhelming obstacles that a school system in crisis present to her. During her first year teaching she never had time to really connect with her students in classroom. However, I see in the film showing that she shared her experience first year teaching where one student came to her classroom and reached out to her. She was able to help him in a personal matter and it felt like she was making a difference and has positive impact. I thought that was incredibly rewarding for her first year as teacher.

  4. 1. I choose inequalities between urban and suburban schools which just goes into detail about the differences between the two types of schools.
    2. I choose this film because I felt that it would be relevant to me because the schools I attented were not always the best. I felt like I could relate to the topic.
    3. 5 points someone should take away after watchin the film are 1. don't judge a student by the way they look 2. urban schools are not as well off as suburban schools 3. kids in urban schools want a variety of programs to be available to them 4.teachers in urban schools lack the tools to help students learn 5. urban students believe that teachers are only looking for a check.
4.I was surprised that the school shown in the film was in very bad shape. It looked real dreary and it wouldn't look like a good place to learn for kids.
5.The part of the film where a student talks about how he would like more programs to be available like chess club, even though he didn't play chess. All the students wanted is to be treated good and be given options in their life.

  5. 1. I choose to watch A Classroom Divided" which is about an elementary school teacher who, right after MLK was shot, decided to teach her class about racism and how it would feel to be discriminated against. She told the class that blue eyed people were better and then on the next day she switched it and said brown eyed people were better.
    2. I choose this film because it seemed like a really interesting experiment to see how students would react to being discriminated against, especially at that time period when racism was everywhere.
    3. 5 points to take away from this film are:
    a) not to discriminate against someone from the way they look
    b) when students are made to feel inferior they do not perform as well in the classroom.
c)If you tell a group of people they are better than someone else they will act like it and start to treat the others worse
    d) it would be good for teachers to talk about racism to their students and teach them that it is wrong
    e) think about how it would feel to be in another persons shoes before you judge them or discriminate against them.
    4. One thing from the film that made me think differently was seeing such young, sweet kids, suddenly turn so mean to their classmates because someone told them they were superior to them because of the color of their eyes. It was crazy to see these kids start to think they were so much better than the kids with brown eyes. It was also interesting to see that the students who were being discriminated against that day did not perform as good on the flash card test they were doing as a group. This shows that when students are made to feel inferior they well live up to the low expectations that are given to them.

  6. 5. One thing that surprised me about the film was that the students would be so mean to their fellow classmates just because a teacher tells them they aren't as good as them because of their eye color.

  7. 1. Share the title and topic of your film.
I saw the film Classroom Privilege, it was about tracking students in school and how a non-tracking class on multicultural literature showed that all students can achieve when high expectations are not just for those in honors or AP classes.
    2. Why your chose that film.
The title seemed interesting to me since I am studying to be a bilingual teacher. Most of the time the type of students that I will one day be teaching are seen in a poor light. I think that too many teachers start to classify and make assumptions about their students based on ethnicity, language or socioeconomic class. I find that to be a disastrous situation.
    3. 5 points one should take away from the film.
That students can’t be lumped into one category of achievement because of what they look like or where they come from. That what students are taught in school should emphasize a more rounded point of view. That tracking students on certain academic paths is irresponsible. That there is no one intelligence, there are multiple intelligences that people are capable of. Also that as teachers, or future teachers you should not have preconceived notions of what your students are capable of because your expectations should be high for all students.
    4. One thing that surprised you about the film.
What surprised me is the fact that the curriculum was in fact multicultural. So often that word is meaningless because multicultural turns into maybe one or two different cultures being learned about in very superficial ways. The students in the film were exposed to so many different authors and books that it made a real impact.
    5. One thing from the film that made your think differently and why?
I think it’s easy to fall into the trap of tracking. I went to a high school in south central Los Angeles for a year, and then transferred to a magnet school for the last two years of high school. I was in AP classes and the attitude is that those who are not in there too are not so bright. This film made me think about how exactly students are placed into these classes in the first place. My first high school had placed me in regular classes and many of my teachers made comments about how bright I was, with this look and tone of surprise. It felt as if they didn’t expect that to be the case because I was in a regular class. Both schools I went to were predominantly Latino but many of the teachers were Anglo. While I didn’t face blatant discrimination I still feel now as if they expected less from me in that school in south central than they did in the magnet school.

  8. 1. Bowling for Columbine
    2. I chose this film because I had heard from friends that it was interesting to watch. I have also visited Littleton Colorado because of a close friend that lives there so I was very curious on what was covered in this documentary.
    3. The violent crime rate in America was higher than other modern countries with the same poverty levels, amounts of guns and pasts of violent history. The culture of fear in America is spread through the media and government into the hearts of its citizens. No connection between gun ownership and gun violence. It shows how America makes and sales ammunition and weapons to other countries and also shows how we have trained people like Osama Bin Laden who have turned around and used our knowledge and weapons on the U.S. It’s hard to believe a six year old child could bring a gun to school and shoot another six year old child but that is what happened at Buell Elementary.
    4. How a bank in Michigan was giving away hunting rifles as a promotion deal when you signed up for a time deposit account after a background check. Giving away a gun at a bank is asking to get robbed you would think.
    5. It made me notice some of the fear presented in the news and how this does seem to be a way government uses to control its people and how there is a much larger rate of violent crime in the U.S. compared to other countries.

  9. 1. I saw Freedom Writers, it's a movie about a teacher who has the challenge of teaching a very diverse classroom where everyone hates everyone. It's about overcoming diversity, earning respect and trust, being tolerant to others, and making sacrifices.
    2. I have always heard many things about the movie and it seem very interesting. I want to teach in a diverse classroom and specially to low income students, the movie seemed perfect.
    3. 5 points one should take away from the film.
You shouldn't lower your student expectations because of what they look like or where they come from. You should try and avoid segregation in our classrooms and help students see each other as equals. As future teachers we should be prepare to deal with racism and bullying. Also, that all students should have the same privileges of using textbook, technology, and all academic materials. Finally, we should be enthusiastic, respectful, and strive to teach our students with an open mind and all sides of an issue, remembering they all come from different places, but treating them all as equal, exposing students to a variety of positions or perspectives on a subject.
    4. It was very interesting and amazing to see the teacher fight so hard to teach her students, to not only settle for what the school was willing to allow them to use, but for her to look for another way to provide the students the materials needed for them to learn and succeed in her classroom and later on in life.
    5. One thing from the film that made your think differently and why? As a student I always thought teachers had to abide to the principles rules and that there wasn't much they could do but follow them. Here the teacher knows the students deserve a better education and fights to get what her principle isn't willing to give them by going to the board. How is easy to just go with the flow instead of fighting for what is right. She really makes you see the difference a teacher can make in a students life and what a teacher should be. How you should have high expectations of your students and they will accomplish to meet them.

  10. 1. Share the title and topic of your film.
    1.Freedom Writers , How a teacher made a difference
    2. Why your chose that film.
Because it was touching to see how one teacher made a difference by caring about her students.

    3. 5 points one should take away from the film.
    1. She wanted her students to have the same opportunity as the other students in the school. The school did not provide them with books because 1 They were not smart enough to read them and 2 because the books would be given back damaged or never returned . So therefor the books just sat in the back untouched. They didn't even want to try with these students and the way they made it seem was basically like these students were big problem the school was stuck with to deal with . They were happy to just have the students behave in class. To me this is what separates many educators. You cant just chose to help a selected group of students and leave behind the others . In my eyes there is no separate expectations , a teachers expectations should be the same to all students making/pushing them to be the best they can.
    2. she brought everyone together in the classroom . The class was divided by race , groups etc so she needed to find away to bring them together and she did. With the "line game" she made the students realize that they are not that much different from one another and have shared many similar experiences .
    3. found away to teach them or in other words she found away to make them interested in learning. She could've just taught was was needed and who ever passed passed and who ever failed failed but instead she chose a learning method that grasped their attention and really brought the students in. This is important because i feel she went the extra mile for them.
    4. She provided a safe classroom . Basically the classroom was a safe place to be , the students could express themselves freely and simple just be them. When i become a teacher i want the same thing , the same kinda classroom environment she created .
    5. she expected something great out of all of them which gave them the drive to want to do better. All it took was one person to believe in them and thats what she did.

    4. One thing that surprised you about the film. what surprised me was how she impacted their lives . When the film first started i didnt think that she would go to the extent that she did. like i mentioned before all it took was one person to believe. she changed the life of her students because the outcome for most of them with the school system they were in would probably have been dropping out of school or not graduating so to see the success of most of the students was great =)
    5. One thing from the film that made your think differently and why? From this film i learned that everybody has their own story. As a teacher i feel its important to know my students and gain a connection with them so that way i can help them that much more . I want my students to see that they can conquer what they want.

  11. The title of the film is “Affluenza” which is based on the epidemic of overconsumption and “the damage done to our health, our families, our communities and our environment by the obsessive quest for material gain”.

I chose this film because honestly I wasn’t quite sure what it was about. I’ve never heard of “affluenza” and I thought it was some sort of illness or disease. Which according to the film it actually is.

Five points one should take away for this film”

    - We spending and consume far more than we actually need, “we want, want, want”
We strive for more and work most of their lives to obtain the status quo - “swollen expectations”
    Most buy largely on impulse
We are saving less, have more debt than ever and live on a mentality of possession overload
On average people are unhappy because they don’t have the material things they want and when they do, they’ve accrued so much debt which again caused them unhappiness. They experience heart palpitations, depression, anxiety, worry, fear, marriages suffer, families suffer and life is taken up by possessions.

One think that surprised me is how advertising companies prey on kids. It’s called “kid power” and we’ve seen a big boom in child empowerment to buy stuff. Children are more materialistic now than ever and the consumer lifestyle starts younger and younger.

    5. I think after watching this film I will think differently on my purchasing power when it comes to my children. I don’t want them growing up thinking they need “stuff” to define who they are and what they can accomplish. Life is so much more than material items that only bring temporary happiness. I don’t want them to think their worth comes with a price tag. I want them to be happy and appreciate all they have, big or small. I’d also like to slow down a bit and enjoy the small, simple things in life, instead of just working and wasting my time striving to “keep up with the Jones” so to speak. Who wants to live life in worry or debt, fighting with loved ones over money, feeling insecure, etc....our time here is precious and we should be making memories that count.

  12. 1. The film I chose to view was Ad and Ego which is about advertising and how it has a great impact on what we buy and use every day.
    2. I chose this topic because we spoke about it in our class Tuesday and it seemed very interesting to me the presentation we were shown and how they mentioned the fact that a basketball players tattoos got airbrushed and didn’t even get to make the cover of a magazine because to them a role model shouldn’t portray themselves this way and how a lot of NBA players spoke up about this. I also found interesting that some students brought up the fact that models get airbrushed all the time and never speak about it and how wrong they are about doing this because most models are skinny and flawless and in reality photo shop just does a really great job in hiding all of the imperfections and so much is done in order to get that model to look absolutely gorgeous. The message is wrong for teen girls who are already not satisfied with the way they view themselves and to have to compete with these perfect models that aren’t even real is crazy, and even men try to compare these women to “real” imperfect women.
    3. Five things one should take from the movie is that 1. You may think that you aren’t being affected by these advertisements but in reality subconsciously you are being affected. 2. These advertisements are definitely made to want to buy the product. 3. They make you believe you will be like these people in these commercials if you buy or use this product. For example if you use the deodorant secret you’re strong and confident. 4. You watch more than an average of 1500 advertisements per day . 5. People who advertise are researchers they have studied this for years and know that everything they are advertising is going to affect you as consumers.
    4. One thing surprised me about the film is that so many people actually think that advertising does not affect them. They think that just by not paying too much attention to the commercials or to what it is they are selling or just skimming through magazines they are not being influenced but in reality they are. Almost everyone is guilty of buying a product simply because they saw it in a magazine and it made the girl look absolutely beautiful or buy something that showed you surrounded by friends having a great time. Like the video says the people who say who aren’t being affected are the people sitting there wearing Budweiser caps and shirts.
    5. The film made me think about a lot of things like the fact that even though you think you aren’t really interested in the product or what they are advertising your subconscious mind is still taking all of it in. I am guilty myself of buying a product simply because the perfume showed a couple happy and in love and I figured that my boyfriend would love if I smelled that way and that it would be a romantic scent. You just have to be more aware of what the product is and really think is buying this going to make me happier, make me feel prettier, or is just something that is absolutely not going to do anything for me and maybe I don’t even need it.

  13. I was very interested in the advertising discussion we had last week during class and therefore I chose to watch the film Ad and Ego. The main topic in this film discusses advertising and the different affects that it has on its viewers (us), Like I said before I was very intrigued by our class discussion and since i used to be a journalism major advertising has always been an interesting topic. The discussion about the NBA player who was air brushed because the commissioner did not like what he was portraying was really got me interested. I think that most people are aware that basketball players like all athletes are bound to have tattoos. Tattoos are a way for people to express themselves and should not be seen as a negative thing. I was glad to hear that other players were offended by this move. I think at times people do not really respect basketball players but what some people do not realize is that basketball players are looked at as being role-models for children of all ages. They need to be taken seriously no matter how many tattoos they have.
Advertising started off as a simple way to let consumers know of products that were available to be purchased. Advertising were brought about to help increase the amount of products that were being purchased. On average a person sees about 1500 advertisements a day. Even if you think that an advertisement does not affect you, you are being affected both subconsciously and consciously. People often have a low self-esteem because of the models that are used in advertising. I was surprised to learn that advertisements target the competition in all people. Advertisements are aimed at making you want to look better, feel better, smell better and so on then all others. The part of the film that made me think differently was when one of the professors discusses how he does an exercise with his students where they look at themselves in a mirror for 15 minutes. He said that the majority of the students feel uncomfortable doing so because advertisements have changed the idea of “beauty”. This made me think that advertisements are making people lose their self-esteem. I think that people should feel confident and beautiful without wearing a certain makeup or certain clothes. Advertisements have changed this.

  14. Blog 12 Critical Viewing
After watching your choice of film from our Blackboard collection, answer the following items:
    I. Share the title and topic of your film.
The film I chose was The Great Debaters. The topic of this film was the true story of a professor and his debate team in the early 1930’s who were determined to overcome racial turmoil and prove themselves.
II. Why your chose that film.
I chose this movie for two reasons: the first being that I myself was a debater in high school, and I was intrigued about what this movie would pertain to.
III. 5 points one should take away from the film.
    1) One must never give up.
    2) When you work as a team/unite is when all things are possible.
    3) Sometimes it is necessary to undergo difficulties in order to bring about change.
    4) You must not be afraid to fight/work for what you know/believe is right; persistence pays off.
    5) You must not underestimate someone because of what he/she may look like, their speech, or their past.
IV. One thing that surprised you about the film.
I was taken aback by how thoroughly explicit some of the scenes in this film were. In particular the scene where the students come upon a lynching I found graphic but very successful. However, regardless of how intense some of the scenes were I applaud the writer(s) and director for adding such real details and keeping the story authentic.

    V. One thing from the film that made your think differently and why?
While I was watching this film I was struck by a line that one of the characters, Denzel Washington’s character said, “We do what we have to do in order to do what we want to do.” I found this quote incredibly prodigious; not only does it apply to suffrage, matters of civil rights, and other political movements but it can also pertain to personal difficulties as well. For instance, I, along with many others, are facing the painful and often times stressful experiences that come with final exams and projects. We endure all trials however, because we have the goal of getting our degrees and eventually getting to work in a profession we love and are dedicated to.

  15. Bowling Columbine, this video talked about the amount of guns easily available for everyone. It also talked about how this may have had an effect on Columbine. It interviews those who own guns and also talks about how violence has affected our world. I chose this film because the title interested me. This was a very tragic day for everyone and after watching this video it saddens me how guns are easily accessible. From the film, I still cannot decide if I’m for or against guns. I’ve wanted to take a concealed handgun license course for safety reasons but I’m weary on the fact that anyone can do the same and use it for other purposes. After watching the film, I also can agree that poverty does increase the amount of violence. One thing that surprised me was a demonstration of how uniforms can prevent the risk of students bringing guns to school. The demonstration was of a student in regular clothes, loose fitted jeans and a sweater. The student pulled out several knifes and amount 10 guns all hidden in his pants. Schools were trying to enforce the school uniform policy by showing how it can pose a positive effect for the schools. One thing that made me feel differently is how the gun association held a big convention about a month after Columbine. I completely understand that everyone has rights, but I don’t see how this association can come into the town holding a convention about pro choice for guns after such a tragedy.

  16. The film I chose is Maid in America. The film is based on illegal immigrants who strive to live in America. I chose this film because the title sounded interesting and in the first few minutes of it, it had my attention
    1. I never realized how many people want to come to America. They open themselves to do the most hard working jobs to receive an income that they cant come close to in their native country. One lady specifically said that what you make in Mexico in a week you make in one day in the United States
    2. Many people sacrifice leaving their entire lives behind to make their earnings. They miss their own children grow up, husband, family funerals, everything in order to send money to their families.
    3. Most come to America and become Domestic workers. Over 100,000 domestic workers are in LA. This means that these people leave their own families to be part of these strangers families. I cant imagine how it must feel to not be able to raise your own children but are able to raise someone else.
    4. Its shocking to me that once they are in America, many cant just return back to their native countries. One lady has been away from her family for five years because she cant go visit without legal documentation. Once some are in America, they are in America until they feel the dont need to make the income they receive.
    5. The domestic women does all the house duties and basically raised the families son yet she doesn't even get paid 10 dollars an hour. This woman is raising someone Else's son and not even her own and she receives this income that yes its better than what she could get in Mexico but raising a child is worth so much more than what shes receiving. Americans take advantage of these innocent people in ways. That woman deserves so much more.
One thing that surprised me about this film was that although one woman sacrificed her entire life to get to America, left her own kids and husband in Mexico she lives every day with hope. She also has this strong love for this child that she raised like her own. Its great to see that although people struggle and sacrifice, they still have a good mind set and accomplish their wishes.
This film made me think differently of immigrants and the way they are treated. They are grateful to be in America and I have a lot of respect for them. If they are hired on to a job, the person that hired them has to know they are illegal therefore should treat them with some what respect.

  17. I watched the video "Killing us Softly 3". This video talked about the way ads influence the way women are perceived and the way women want to and try to perceive themselves. I chose this film because the title intrigued my curiosity. At first I believed it might be about something in our food or water or some type of disease since that is what we have been mostly looking at. Then, when the film started I was surprised that it was talking about advertisement and more specifically about women in advertising and how it affects them and the whole world. Five points one should take from the film is: 1: Every women is different and we are all beautiful in our own way, 2: Advertisement should not influence our everyday decisions because we all have brains and intelligence we can use, 3: Women should not compare themselves to women the media create because most are not real they are computer generated or transformed, 4: We should fight against the image the media or advertisements create of women and not surmise to it, 5: The media devalues women so why should we follow a and pay attention to something that only creates hostility towards women? One thing that surprised me about the film is how devalued women are on advertisements. I had really never stopped to examine an advertisement that closely but, after seeing and hearing the explanation for some advertisements I am disgusted at how lowly women are portrayed by ads. One thing that made me think differently are all the ads that were explained and viewed. It totally opened my eyes to the reality and how ads should not teach us how to view ourselves or how we should be viewed. They are false and inaccurate in their portrayal of women.

  18. 1) I watched the film "Thirst" which was about the quest of corporations to privatize public water sources.
    2) I chose to watch this film as I wanted to find out what the "thirst" was alluding to although I thought it might be talking about water.
    3) Five points that one should take away from this film are: a)the coming water shortage due to continued population growth, as well as environmental changes, is absolutely real and is basically upon us ;b) a lot of the pressure for countries to privatize their water supply is coming from the World Bank who many feel is working in the interests of the multinational companie; c) residents of Stockton, California have had their water privatized with their Mayor, Gary Podesto, saying that citizens basically do not have the understanding necessary to know what is good for them and refusing to let the people have a vote on the issue; d) water privatization was enacted by a company called Bechtel, with the government's blessing, in Bolivia's 3rd largest city with water rates then increasing anywhere from 30-300%;the govt. finally relented only after there was an uprising by the people in which many were killed and which basically brought the city to a standstil; e) and the banning or boycotting of bottled water may help to make privatizing of water sources less attractive as companies will not be making money from that venture.
    4) One thing that surprised me in this film is the fact that a Mayor here in the USA has already privatized water in his city against his constituent's wishes and stated that his city's "citizens" should start being thought of as "customers" instead.
    5) The thing that made me think differently after watching this film was that most people believe that the privatization of water is an issue being dealt with "somewhere else". The truth is it is happening here! It is happening now! I feel we must be vigilant and become more informed on the issues that are affecting us. I also feel we must research those we elect to try and make sure that they actually will represent our views and have our best interests at heart once elected to office.

  19. . The title of the film I watched was It's Elementary: Talking about Gay Issues in School

    2. I saw the title It's ELEMENTARY and my mind automatically went to the thought of children or schooling. Kids are my passion so I was assuming that it would have something to do with them. But as I continued to watch the video I saw that it had a deeper meaning to it. I have had homosexual friends but I have never openly talked to them about how they felt when people call them names or have gotten other people's opinion on the situation.

    3. Five points that I think one should take away from the film is: for one, homosexuality is a more serious topic than what people realize. Many people do not like to talk about this issue because they feel they may hurt the other persons feelings. I think it should be talked about more because that one person could change another's perception. Secondly, although homosexuality is a preference, they are normal/regular people with feelings just like a heterosexual person is. Thirdly, from what I gathered watching the film, a lot of kids get their ideas of homosexuality through the media. So as a parent I think they should be aware of what their kids are watching or what internet sites they may be on. The fourth point kind of ties in with the last one being that parents need to educate their children on what is right and what is wrong. As stated children see whatever is on tv and think it is okay, but that is not the case. Parents need to sit down and have a "heart to heart" conversation about this topic. Teachers are teaching it in schools but as a parent I would rather my child hear it come out of my mouth rather than theirs. Lastly, as the film showed this one guys father was a pastor but that obviously had no affect on him and his decision to become gay. A homosexual could be one of the most religious people in the world but you cannot persuade them into thinking any different.

    4. A couple things surprised me in this film. One being 28% of gay teenagers drop out of high school which is twice the national average. Not only that but they are more prone to use drugs and alcohol. 30% of suicides are from people dealing with homosexuality. What really surprised me though was how the violence rate rose to 110% in New York. I am unsure of what the rate was before but that is a HUGE percentage!

    5. One thing that I took away from the film was how important it is to watch what I say around someone of this preference. Words can hurt, so it is very important that I am aware of what I am saying and who I am saying it to. I can admit that I have said some not so nice things about homosexuals but watching this film gave me a different outlook on how it affects people.

  20. 1. Share the title and topic of your film: I Am a Promise reveals the challenges that come with educating children who live in poverty and come from troubled backgrounds.
    2. Why your chose that film: Honestly I had no specific reason, the title just caught my eye.
    3. 5 points one should take away from the film
-Dont take what you have for granted
-Stay positive, even when situations seem impossible.
-No student should be treated differently, they should have to same rights as everyone else
-We live in a world that has progressed so much, but still fails to reach out to those who need it the most
-Be one of those people who will make a difference in the lives of these children who need it; whether it be one or many! Anything helps.
    4. One thing that surprised you about the film: It wasnt so much that I was surprised, I was more reminded of the hardships children so young are forced to deal with. We all know that people in other parts of the city live in poverty and sickness, but we forget that they even exist. We get so caught up in living our own lives we forget about the people still struggling.
    5. One thing from the film that made your think differently and why? It made me think differently about my life and all the luxuries I am able to enjoy in my life. Things may not always go my way or even be easy, but my life has been nowhere near as hard as these children. This film has caused me view my life in a completly different way, never again will I take the people in my life and opportunities I am given for granted. I am truly, truly blessed!!

  21. 1. The video I watched was "It's Elementary". It was about teaching gay issues in school.
    2. I choose this film because I thought it was about elementary schoolers and what they did in the classroom. I am interested in being an elementary school teacher and i thought it was going to teach me what elementary schoolers did in the classroom.
    3. 5 points someone would take away from this film is one; that even students in elementary school understand that people in this world do not agree with gay/lesbians and they listen to what the thoughts of others opinions for their opinions. Two, Teaching about gay/lesbians in the classroom is a great idea. It opens up the students mind and gives them more positive opinions rather then only getting all the negative talk. Three, Having guest speakers come and talk to students helps the students actually understand the life of a gay/lesbian and helps them realize that they are still normal people just with different interests in who they love. Everyone is different in some way and has different interests in a lot of things and gay/lesbians shouldn't be judged on their interests. Four, Kids base a lot of what they new off of what they see on TV or in movies. With a few of the clips they showed, I don't understand why any parent would let their kid watch them to begin with, but parents need to have more control over what their kids watch. Whatever happened to all these Disney PG/G rated movies. Finally, the fifth reason is that no matter what the person background is or what they do in life, it has no affect to why they become gay/lesbian. A person's parents can threaten and put consequences, but its not going to change the person's opinion in life.
    4. One thing that surprised me about the film is how young these kids are and they realize what the world is saying about gay and lesbians. It shocks me that these young of kids are being brought up in this world where gay and lesbian talk is everywhere and nobody ever has anything good to say.
    5. I learned in this film that students hear all these things about gay/lesbians and all they have is nothing but negatives to say. It makes me think differently about how I should respond and reflect towards gay/lesbians and in front of kids especially. Its our job to insure kids that they can be whatever they wanna be. Whether its an astronaut, a rockstar, or being gay, one person has every right to decide what they want to do. And I took from this film, that we have to help encourage kids to be able to accept people that are gay/lesbian because one day, that might be them and they are going to be the ones that people are going to be talking bad about.

    -True Meaning of Pictures
-Photography and the meaning of pictures and the Appalachian people in them
    2. Why your chose that film.
-I enjoy photography and from the very beginning I was drawn in by the film by just the way it started
    3. 5 points one should take away from the film.
1)The photographer says: "People accept me because I accept them"
2)Photos can tell an entire story.
3)Hillbillies are the modern term/view of Appalchians, I had no idea.
    4) Not to believe all stereotypes and movies with the way they portray certain types of people.
    5) when you look at pictures: think of how the photographer wants us to view this scene and what they are trying to portray by the way it is taken

    4. One thing that surprised you about the film.
-The ecclectic photos shown throughout the film. These wouldn't be considered "good pictures" because the people are "rough" by today's standards but I like them.
Christianity ideas are mentioned quite a few times.
    5. One thing from the film that made your think differently and why?
-The way the people in the film live, it is so different from the way I live. They are very interesting people. Just because they're different doesn't mean they're weird.

    5. One thing from the film that made your think differently and why?
    1. Its Elementary, the view of kids’ viewpoints.
    2. While looking through the videos this caught my attention because I want to be an elementary teacher.
3.Gather how kids have different viewpoints for every learning topic, different topics that are being taught and educated in schools, how teachers react to the viewpoints to the kids in the classrooms, ways that can help for the schools to be more comfortable and better learning experience for the kids, kids explain their opinions,
    4. How elementary kids now viewpoints of the idea of "gay" and how they know so much and they are just elementary children. And how the some schools in the film says that they should be educated in the "gay" topic.
    5. One thing that may me think differently is how children know already know too much about certain topics and they are like only in 2nd -5th grade. How each generation is growing and growing faster.

    4. One thing that surprised you about the film.
    5. One thing from the film that made your think differently and why?

    1. The title of the video I watched was "It's Elementary." The video talked about the importance of talking to kids, even at a young age, about gays and lesbians.

    2. When I first chose this film, I didn't really know the topic. I chose it based on the title. I figured anything it had to say would be relevant to me because I want to teach 4th or 5th grade.

    3. The five points I think people should take away from this film are:
-We shouldn't tell people whether or not they should agree with gay and lesbianism but they should be respectful of people's ideas and feelings
-Namecalling is not okay because we never know who we can hurt
-People who are gay or lesbian don't necessarily look or act a certain way and we should not be quick to judge someone based on what we see
-Talking to students and raising awareness is critical and appropriate no matter what the age, we just have to be sensitive to age in the way it is talked about
-Gay and lesbianism should be openly discussed, even with parents

    4. One thing that schocked me about the film was the questions that the students asked the speaker. Their questions were very blunt and ignorant. It was amazing to see how many students knew so little about people who are gay. Some even admitted to knowing nothing about it but still teasing people about it.

    5. After watching this video, I realize it is more than necessary to be open with speaking to people about people who are gay and lesbian. I also realize that the younger the age, the better it is to start.

Ad and Ego which is about advertisements in the world and how it effects us on a daily basis

    2. Why your chose that film.
I had just done a project advertising and it actually really helped me so I decided to write my blog on it too.

    3. 5 points one should take away from the film.
    a. advertising doesn't just effect you while you're reading/watching/looking at it, you don't even need to know what it's about for it to effect you.
    b. advertising is supposed to reach you in a subconscious level for example, ever get that silly jingle is hooked in your head for the rest of the day? That's what it's talking about
    c. There are so many different ways for an advertisement to seem convincing, the people who create them target specific audiences to get them to purchase their product.
    d. We see about 1500 advertisements a day whether you notice them or not
    e. These people who think up ideas for advertisements have been researching ways for years in order for them to have to ability to convince you that their product works

    4. One thing that surprised you about the film.
I didn't realize how sneaky advertising was. They will do just about ANYTHING to get you to buy their product whether they know if it's worth it or not. I have learned that they will go to whatever means necessary and that there is a strategy that goes along with it. They will interview people on their commercials and tell you that Brad Pitt uses their hair gel and that he is the hottest guy in the world and you will be just like him if you buy what they're selling you. Of course, that's not how it works but that's basically what they're doing in order for you buy their product.

    5. One thing from the film that made your think differently and why?
They don't care about the consumer. All advertising is to me is a way to get more money. They want to do whatever they can in order to get you to buy their product. They will lie to you (Ex: tell you someone is a Dr. but is really just an actor), distract you (ex: if you buy one within the next 2 hours we'll throw in another one for FREE), and make things sound too good to be true. From what I've learned in life, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
